The Food Waste Reduction Challenge
Food waste is a problem. Despite total landfill emissions decreasing, food waste emissions are increasing—associated with direct and indirect environmental impacts, ranging from soil erosion to deforestation to water and air pollution.
33M Tons
33 million tons of food product are sent to landfills every year. That’s nearly ¼ of the total waste deposited into landfills.
50M Homes
Food waste disposal utilizes enough water and energy to supply 50 million homes.
42 Power Plants
The yearly CO2 emissions from food waste are equivalent to 42 coal-fired power plants.
Consumers and retail-level channel members have typically been responsible for reducing food waste, but a problem this size requires action at every level. Manufacturers have waste reduction options at their disposal that can lessen the impact of food waste on our environment and on consumers experiencing food insecurity.
Typically, when producers encounter a quality issue such as foreign material contamination, one of the most common solutions is to dispose of product in a landfill. Our aim as a third-party inspection company is to change this way of thinking—and move towards salvaging as much safe product as possible through proper inspection.
